While watching the Men’s Olympic Marathon yesterday, I couldn’t help but reflect on why it is that some people instinctually dislike athletes and the concept of sport in general. As Vanderlei de Lima, the Brazilian marathoner who was attacked during yesterday’s race, recovered from the horrific incident, you could easily tell he was on the brink of tears. Anyone who has run a marathon can tell you that he was not upset over the attack per se, but over the fact that he was abruptly brought back to the harsh reality of his pain, discomfort and fear. His fear was of the hurt that was assuredly going to overcome him in the final three miles of his marathon, and fear of the two other marathoners who were quickly closing in on his passionately aspired Gold Medal. You see, before he was ambushed, Vanderlei de Lima was in what many marathoners tritely refer to as “the zone.” To the common viewer, the question of who would have won the Gold Medal is unknowable, but I assure you that Vanderlei de Lima is certain the honor would have been his.
This brings me back to the topic at hand. Why would someone have so little regard for something that calls others to dedicate their entire lives to its cause? I personally find the actions made by this marathon protester akin to destroying a timeless work of art such as Michelangelo’s David or Leonardo da Vinci’s Mona Lisa. All are definitive achievements, preceded by countless hours of toil and dedication. To see this happen is not only sickening, but offensive as well.
Since 1896, the Olympic Games have been a unification of many different cultures and beliefs in a common cause, that cause is sport. Witnessing the way many Americans rooted for this year’s Iraqi Soccer Team proves that sport can do what juggernauts of foreign policy only dream of doing, uniting countries in peace and unanimity. To dismiss sport as something futile, insignificant or wasteful is to ignore the fact that it has accomplished something that religion, democracy and government have all failed to do, develop respect and admiration among individuals with opposing views.
People need to develop more esteem for Olympic athletes. While many commercial athletes make millions of dollars, live copious lifestyles and get into trouble, Olympic athletes often work multiple jobs, use all free time for training and dedicate their entire life to their quest. This builds character, instills discipline and demands modesty from the Olympic athlete, something of which we could all use a good dose. This is why it is important to care about sport, and respect sport for what it is, a way for an individual to truly discover how strong he or she can be. You can learn a lot about yourself when you have been tackled by a protester 23 miles into a marathon. Are you the type of person that will stay down, and later complain that it was not fair? Or are you the type of person who has nerves of steel, the type of person who can get back up and finish the race to earn an Olympic Medal. Most of us will never know, but we should trust and respect the individuals who have taken the risk to find out.
USAALLTHEWAY thanks you for your interest during these last two weeks; it has been a wonderful ride. We will see you in 2008. Long live sport!

USAALLTHEWAY is officially in denial about a lot of things, especially the basketball game between the US National Dream Team and the National Team of Argentina. USA Basketball just ended the first half in our semifinal match up with Argentina trailing by 5 points. We’ve dominated the boards, but have shown signs of sloppy ball handling and impatience on offense. If we settle down and play team ball, we should be able to handle Ginobili and this talented Argentine Team. Show some support for our boys – let’s cheer them on to victory in the second half. If you are going to mess with someone, it better not be Shawn Crawford.
Crawford, Justin Gatlin and Bernard Williams were booed incessantly on the starting line of the Men's 200-meter Final; during all of this, the men kept their cool and swept the field winning Gold, Bronze and Silver, respectively.
In other Track and Field news:
Americans Dwight Phillips and John Moffitt earned Gold and Silver in the Long Jump, another impressive 1-2 punch.
Felix Sanchez of the Dominican Republic took home the Gold in the Men's 400-meter Hurdles to win the first-ever Gold Medal in Olympic history for the beautifulisland nation.

All I have to say about the Women's 400-meter Relay Qualifier is "Damn!"
First of all, the USA not only has the best looking team on the track, but with speedsters Angela Williams, Marion Jones, Lauryn Williams and LaTasha Colander they are also the fastest. After running the fastest time in the world this year in a semi-final, Team USA will be attempting a new World Record tonight in the final. USAALLTHEWAY thinks they can do it.
Be on the lookout for our favorite athlete of all, Team USA's anchor leg LaTasha Colander.

There have been many opportunities to listen to the United States national anthem, entitled The Star Spangled Banner. But, like most Americans, I am not only ignorant of the histories of other nations and cultures, but also that of my own Nation. As a direct result, I did a little bit of research, and we here at USAALLTHEWAY would like to tell you a little bit more about that little ditty that has been played at least twenty-eight times as of today. In short, "The Star Spangled Banner was flown as the garrison flag of Fort McHenry during the British siege of the fort during the War of 1812. When Francis Scott Key saw the flag from a ship eight miles down the Patapsco River on September 14, 1814, the flag was still waving in the breeze after twenty-five hours of heavy bombardment by the British. The British were very discouraged to see it still there, but Key was inspired to write the poem that became the National Anthem." Wow, I get goosebumps just thinking about it.
History of the United States of America National Anthem: Star Spangled Banner
While many know the story behind Francis Scott Key penning the beloved Star Spangle Banner, not many know the story of the flag that was flown at Fort McHenry that inspired the Key to write the words that would become the National Anthem of the United States of America. This flag was created by Mary Young Pickersgill.
The War of 1812 was a critical time during in America's history. The Commander of Fort McHenry, Colonel Armistead, along with other military leaders, knew how important Fort McHenry was to nation at this time. The British had burned Washington and were advancing toward Balitmore. These brave leaders felt that the Baltimoreans were discouraged and afraid. They felt that they would have their spirits raised by seeing a huge, high flying flag at Fort McHenry as a symbol of defiance.
It was because of this that Colonel Armistead commissioned Mary Youngs Pickersgill, a local seamstress and flag maker to make two flags for Fort McHenry in 1813 - a large flag and a smaller one to fly in bad weather. She was paid $500 for both flags, the large one being 30 x 42 feet, so it could be seen from a great distance. She was asked to sew a flag with 15 stars and 15 stripes, the number of states then in the Union.
Anticipating an attack on Fort McHenry by the British during the War of 1812, Major Armistead asked that the flag be made extra large so that it would be plainly visible to the English Fleet. He had also hoped the large flag would lift the spirits of the Baltimoreans, allowing them to see this flag fly in defiance of the British.
This flag was used as the garrison flag of Fort McHenry during the British siege of the fort during the War of 1812. When Francis Scott Key saw the flag from a ship eight miles down the Patapsco River on September 14, 1814, the flag was still waving in the breeze after twenty-five hours of heavy bombardment by the British. The British were very discouraged to see it still there, but Key was inspired to write the poem that became the National Anthem.
United States of America National Anthem: Star Spangled Banner
Listen to the National Anthem
Oh, say can you see,
By the dawn's early light,
What so proudly we hailed
At the twilight's last gleaming,
Whose broad stripes and bright stars,
Thru the perilous fight,
O'er the ramparts we watched
Were so gallantly streaming?
And the rockets red glare,
The bombs bursting in air,
Gave proof through the night
That our flag was still there.
O, say, does that
Star-Spangled Banner yet wave
O'er the land of the free
And the home of the brave?

Someone give Spanish Basketball Coach Mario Pesquera a stiff drink, he needs it. After the US Basketball Team beat his previously undefeated Spainish Team to move one step closer to gold, Pesquera got this shot off at Coach Larry Brown, "I had -- and I stress the word 'had' -- a lot of respect for Larry Brown,'' said Pesquera, who smirked and shook his head when he heard Brown explain that he tried to rescind the timeout. ”Dean Smith would have never done anything like that.''

Jeff Jarvis, a fellow blogger and distinuished gentleman, has four burning olympic questions: Since when did men's swimming become the plumbing of sports: all butt cracks, why is the BBC worried about nipples, where has women's beach volleyball been my whole (adult) life, and did I really have to know that Misty May carries the ashes of her dear dead mother in a medicine bottle in her backpack and sprinkles them on the ashes of the volleyball sand? We here at USAALLTHEWAY have very similar questions floating around in our minds every day. Thanks, Jeff!

Okay first of all congrats to Gal Fridman of Israel for taking Gold in Men's Mistral. Mistral is what the Olympic committee calls the windsurfing class of the Sailing competition. I was surprised to learn that this is the first Gold Medal for the Israelis in any Olympic sport... ever! In 12 previous Olympics dating to 1952, Israel had won only one Silver and three Bronze Medals. I just saw the party going on at the awards platform and the place is jumping. Mazel Tov! "Boo" for me for not muscling in on the conversation when Holly McPeak and Elaine Youngs were talking to some people while taking a tour of the NBC studios here at the International Broadcast Center. Not only would it have been great to talk to them and try to get an invite to THEIR medal celebration party, but apparently they were handing out women's beach volleyball pins. For anybody who doesn't know, the souvenir pins that get passed around at the Olympics act as currency in some circles. To score some pins from the girls personally would have been a coup. I could have traded those pins for just about anything... And I mean anything.

In a very emotional passing of the proverbial torch, Kenenisa Bekele sprinted to victory in the Men's 10,000-meter Track and Field Final on Friday evening. Bekele claimed victory over defending Gold Medalist and fellow Ethiopian Haile Gebrselassie. There are big stages and there are small. I imagine nothing can compare to standing on that center podium, hearing your nation's anthem while wearing a small headpiece made of a few strands of olive branch. Add to that, the fact that you're participating in a worldwide competition being hosted by your home country; the place where the concept of pitting yourself against your fellow man in the name of fraternal brotherhood began. Okay, there's that -- and before everybody thinks I've gone completely weepy, keep in mind, MY proudest moment was a few moments ago when I correctly used a semicolon in the last paragraph. But, what I want to talk about is the fact that Ilias Iliadis of Greece thrilled the home crowd Tuesday, beating Roman Gontyuk of Ukraine to win the gold medal in the 81-kilogram class. Now, not only is this the first gold medal of these games for Greece, it's also the first time a Greek has won gold in Judo since it became an Olympic sport. When he took the podium, the scene I described above became a reality for Ilias. But what brings a lump to my throat is a story like the one I heard yesterday. Here it is:
In the interest of safety and efficiency, the IOC (International Olympic
Committee) provides shuttle buses for all of us to travel between the venues and our housing. Well, apparently, when Iliadis was leaving Liossia Olympic stadium to return to his room he was one of the last people to get on the bus crowded with Olympic employees and fellow athletes. Without a word, the entire bus broke out in enthusiastic applause. A spontaneous recognition of great individual achievement from his peers and fans. Ilias smiled, sat down and nothing else was said. Pure, sincere, humble, and proud -- for me, what the games are all about.
